Opened in 1837 with some 12,00 graves, the First Cemetery of Athens is a peaceful spot in the middle of Athens not far from the ancient Agora. It is seems to contain one of the biggest collections of marble in the city. The graves are certainly large and elaborate.
Not far away is the Panathenaic Stadium, the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. It was built in its current form around 144 AD replacing a more simple racecourse build in 330 BC. It was excavated in 1869 and hosted the first modern olympics in 1896.
There are cats all over Athens and they are well fed. Just as often you see dishes of cat food left out for them. They seem to be communal outdoor pets more than strays.
