Galleries

Two different galleries – both for shopping rather than art. Starting with Gallerie Vivienne a covered set of shops dating back to 1826.

Next up, Galleries Lafayette, probably the largest department store known outside France. I took a guided tour that allowed access an hour before the store opened to learn all about the history of the building and the store. It has turned out to be one of my favourite activities here.

Built with a massive beautiful glass ceiling we learned more so because electricity was very expensive and this cut down on the need to power lights.

We were provided access to the inner cupola of the ceiling.

As well as getting the chance to do the ‘Glasswalk’ out to really immerse ourselves in the space.

We also had a chance to visit the archives and rooftop terrace

Looking across to Montmatre and Sacre Coeur

Opera Garnier just across the way.
